The vast villa complex built from around 118 CE as a retreat for the emperor Hadrian near Tivoli, combining palace buildings, baths, theatres and gardens laid out around structures inspired by monuments the emperor had seen on his travels, including reproductions evoking Egypt and Greece. One of the largest and most lavish residences of the Roman world, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999.
