One of the largest sanctuaries of Republican Italy, built on a monumental terrace above Tivoli between the late 2nd and early 1st century BCE and dedicated to Hercules Victor, protector of the nearby wool trade and of travellers on the Via Tiburtina. Its ruins later served as the foundation for paper mills that operated on the site into the 20th century, layering industrial archaeology over the ancient sanctuary.
