Renaissance villa and garden at Tivoli, created from 1550 for Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este, governor of Tivoli and son of Lucrezia Borgia, who converted a former Benedictine convent into a residence celebrated for its terraced garden of fountains fed by the waters of the Aniene river. Its elaborate hydraulic system, including the Organ Fountain and the Avenue of a Hundred Fountains, made it a model for European garden design and led to its inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001.
