Painted cave discovered in 1881 by the self-taught local scholar François Daleau, who excavated over 15,000 flint, bone and ivory tools there until 1887. Its engravings, dated to the Aurignacian period between 37,000 and 32,000 years ago and including a giant deer and a 2.5-metre horse, are among the oldest known and helped establish the authenticity of prehistoric art.
