Opened to the public in 1799, making Le Mans one of the first cities in France to have a museum, it has occupied the former episcopal palace, built in the 19th century, since 1927. It brings together Italian primitives, 17th-century French painting, and an Egyptian section with reconstructed tombs of Nefertari and Sennefer.
