Created in 1910 on the initiative of the sculptor Denys Puech, who gave Rodez a substantial body of studio work, the museum occupies a building designed by the architect André Boyer. It holds nearly 1,400 works: sculptures by Puech, paintings by the Orientalist Maurice Bompard, engravings by Eugène Viala, and contemporary art besides.
