Created in 1794 as the departmental museum to receive the property of émigrés and religious houses, it occupies a building on place Godart whose pediments are the work of the sculptor Gustave Navlet (1890–91). Old master paintings, Limoges enamels, sculptures by Rodin and medieval archaeology sit side by side there.
