A hilltop castle above Montesarchio, in Campania's Caudine Valley, with origins traced to the 8th century and later used as a prison, whose 19th-century Bourbon wing now houses the National Archaeological Museum of Sannio Caudino. Opened in 2007, the museum displays around 300 artifacts from the ancient Samnite centers of Caudium, Saticula, and Telesia, most notably a 4th-century-BC crater by the Paestan vase-painter Assteas depicting the Rape of Europa, restituted in 2005 after having been looted and sold abroad.
