Benedictine abbey founded around 731 by three Beneventan noblemen, which grew into one of the great monastic centres of early medieval Italy before being sacked by Saracen raiders in 881. Excavations have uncovered the vast ninth-century basilica of San Vincenzo Maggiore and the crypt of Epyphanius, decorated with Carolingian-era frescoes.
