Museum founded in 1784 as a teaching collection for the adjoining Academy of Fine Arts, now famous above all for housing Michelangelo's David, moved here from Piazza della Signoria in 1873. Its galleries also display the sculptor's unfinished Prisoners and an extensive collection of Florentine Gothic and Renaissance painting.
