Monumental palace begun around 1458 for the Florentine banker Luca Pitti and bought by the Medici in 1549 to become their principal residence. Enlarged over the following two centuries, it now forms a single museum complex with the Palatine Gallery, the Boboli Gardens and several smaller collections.
