Benedictine monastery near Subiaco, built around the Sacro Speco, the cave where Saint Benedict of Nursia lived as a hermit before founding the Benedictine order; the present Romanesque-Gothic complex was consecrated in the eleventh century. It preserves frescoes ranging from an eighth-century Byzantine-style cycle to a 1223 portrait of Saint Francis of Assisi, regarded as the earliest faithful depiction of the saint, along with a 1657 marble statue of Saint Benedict by Antonio Raggi.
