Benedictine monastery near Subiaco, the only one of the twelve founded by Saint Benedict in the sixth century in this valley still inhabited by monks. Its three cloisters range from a ninth-century core to a Cosmatesque cloister and a Renaissance courtyard, and it houses a historic library and a printing press credited with producing Italy's first printed book, in 1465.
