Former residence of the rulers of Mantua from 1308, first the Bonacolsi and then the Gonzaga dynasty, opened as a museum in 1887. Built up over four centuries and unified under architect Giovan Battista Bertani around 1556, its more than 500 rooms include Andrea Mantegna's Camera degli Sposi (1465-74), Pisanello's Arthurian fresco cycle and Isabella d'Este's studiolo.
