Fortress begun in 1396 for Louis d'Orléans, dismantled on the orders of Louis XIII in 1617 and left in ruins for two centuries. Napoleon III entrusted its restoration to Eugène Viollet-le-Duc from 1857, who reimagined it as a showcase of medieval architecture.
