Celestine abbey on the slopes of Monte Morrone near Sulmona, founded in the mid-13th century by the hermit Pietro da Morrone, later Pope Celestine V, and consecrated in the late 1260s; it became the motherhouse of the Celestine congregation in 1293. Rebuilt with a Baroque church around 1730 after earthquake damage, it retains a medieval crypt and 15th-century frescoes by Giovanni da Sulmona, and served as a prison from 1868 until 1993.
