Romanesque abbey church near Capestrano, in Abruzzo, traditionally said to have been founded in the 8th century by the Lombard king Desiderius and rebuilt between the late 11th and early 12th centuries; it was consecrated around 1100 by Pope Paschal II, who brought relics of Saint Peter for the occasion. It preserves apse frescoes of Christ with the evangelists and the Elders of the Apocalypse, and a carved Sator-square palindrome on its facade.
