A castle in Celano, in the Marsica region of Abruzzo, first fortified in 1223 during a siege by the Emperor Frederick II and rebuilt from 1392 for Pietro II Berardi, count of Celano; after 1463 it was transformed into a refined Renaissance residence with a two-tiered arcaded courtyard for Antonio Todeschini Piccolomini, nephew of Pope Pius II. Restored after severe damage in the 1915 earthquake and declared a national monument in 1893, it now displays the Museo d'arte sacra della Marsica together with material from the collection of the Torlonia family, who acquired vast estates in the nearby Fucino basin after draining the lake in the 19th century.
