Archaeological area of ancient Compsa, chief town of the Hirpini Samnites before becoming a Roman municipium; Julius Caesar mentions it in his account of the civil war of 48 BC. Remains brought to light after the 1980 earthquake include the forum, an amphitheatre, baths, houses predating the 2nd century BC and inscriptions, now displayed in an on-site antiquarium.
