Monumental halls of the Marciana Library in Venice, built by Jacopo Sansovino between 1537 and 1588 to house the manuscripts bequeathed by Cardinal Bessarion in 1468. The Renaissance building, praised by Palladio as one of the richest and most ornate since antiquity, has a facade modelled on Rome's Theatre of Marcellus and ceilings and walls painted by Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese and Schiavone; the library's collections moved to the adjoining Zecca in 1904, leaving the halls as a museum space.
