National archaeological museum built on antiquities bequeathed to the Republic of Venice by Cardinal Domenico Grimani in 1523 and expanded by his nephew Giovanni Grimani from 1563, forming the public statuary ('Statuario pubblico') formalised in 1596. Housed in the Procuratie Nuove on Piazza San Marco, it holds Greek sculpture, Roman portraits and reliefs, gems, coins and Egyptian and Assyro-Babylonian antiquities.
