An octagonal fortress on the Murge plateau near Andria, built around 1240–1250 on the order of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, who fused Islamic, classical, and northern European architectural elements in its design. Its original function remains debated, with theories ranging from hunting lodge to seat of learning, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996 for the mathematical and astronomical precision of its plan.
