State museum of archaeology and art in L'Aquila, housed in the 16th-century Forte Spagnolo, a fortress overlooking the city. Opened in 1951, its collections range from the mounted skeleton of a prehistoric southern mammoth found in 1954 to medieval and Renaissance sculpture by artists such as Silvestro dell'Aquila; the fort, damaged by the 2009 earthquake, reopened to the public after restoration.
