Archaeological park of Altinum, a Veneti settlement that grew into a major Roman port city linking the Adriatic to routes across the eastern Alps, reaching municipal status by the mid-1st century BC. Aerial surveys in 2007-2009 revealed its full street grid beneath the fields, along with a theatre and an amphitheatre measuring roughly 500 by 370 Roman feet; finds from the site are displayed in the National Archaeological Museum of Altino, founded in 1960. Long linked to legends of Venice's founding after Attila's attack in 452, the city in fact survived for centuries afterward.
